St Barbara Announces High School Competition to Help Design New Lookout Area at Touquoy
Moose River, Nova Scotia (September 6, 2024) – St Barbara Mining and their subsidiary, Atlantic Mining Nova Scotia are pleased to announce they are opening a competition for high schools along the Eastern Shore to assist in designing a community space around the lookout over the lake that will form at the former Touquoy Gold Mine in Moose River.
While many elements of the reclamation of the site are strictly defined in consultation with Nova Scotia’s Department of Natural Resources and Renewables and Department of Environment, some areas on the site can be allocated back to the community for public use.
“We are interested in the views of students. We want to hear about what they would want to see or how they would want to design this space for future community use,” said Andrew Strelein, Director of Atlantic Mining Nova Scotia.
Reclamation activities are underway on the site and more than $7 million is being invested in reclamation activities over this summer alone.
“We are excited to be the very first mining company in Nova Scotia to start full reclamation of a metals mine,” says Andrew Strelein, Director of Atlantic Mining Nova Scotia, “the reclamation process provides us with opportunities to engage with interested groups. This opportunity will offer younger generations of Nova Scotians involvement in this very important phase of the mine and the future of their community. Mine closure planning engineering, industrial scale landscape architecture and rehabilitation civil works engineering are all interesting potential career paths that students may not even be aware of.”
Materials will be sent to high schools in the beginning of the 2024-25 school year and submissions to the company will be accepted until December of 2024. St Barbara will review the submissions and will name a winning classroom and school in early 2025. The winning classroom will earn a $25,000 prize for its school. All schools that participate will receive a $1,000 contribution.
Once suggestions have been submitted the leading suggestions will also be reviewed with a landscape architect to develop the final design for implementation.
