St Barbara’s Atlantic Mining is dedicated to our community and responsible environmental management.
We demonstrate this everyday the thorough our site management, and now the reclamation of the Touquoy site and the purchase of an equivalent area of ecologically significant land for conservation. And we’re actively supporting the future success of community projects and organizations on the Eastern Shore.
Care for Home: Melissa's Story
Melissa and her team of environmental experts are the first to carry out the reclamation of a metal mine in Nova Scotia. They are proud to care for the lands we use, and their work will set the standard for future generations. Find out how.
200+ monitoring stations
We check 43 surface stations and 167 groundwater stations every month to ensure we’re achieving environmental standards.
Over 1,150 water samples a year
We take 668 groundwater samples and 500 surface water samples to measure against strict environmental standards, ensuring the quality of our waterways.
100 years of monitoring
After the mine tailings are dry, covered, and seeded, we will monitor the restored site for plant adaptation (at least 20 years) and dam stability (100 years).
96% of water used was recycled
Approximately 96% of the water we used during mining operations was recycled through our water treatment facility. The remaining 4% was used for kitchens and washrooms.
Protecting our shared environment.
We adhere to strict environmental regulations.
Our value of Respecting the Environment is reflected in the work of all our team members. We have in place the largest reclamation bond in Nova Scotia and we are proud to have remediated historical mine tailings – something nobody else in the province has done.
Atlantic Mining has provided the largest reclamation bond in Nova Scotia, providing security to full restoration activities.
Learn more about environmental charges levied against St Barbara in 2020. Since St Barbara assumed ownership, Atlantic Mining has rehabilitated the sediment spill that led to environmental charges in 2020. While the spill occurred before St Barbara took ownership, it was our responsibility to remediate it as the new owners. The affected area’s return to full ecological function is monitored each year, with the three-year update on our progress due later in 2024.
